night moves

I can thank my dad for many things, but introducing me to the music of Bob Seger, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Meatloaf, The Rolling Stones, and The Eagles (among many other legendary artists) is something that I'm most thankful for. Having parents with an endless library of rock music is something I'll never get sick of, and tonight, I'm feelin' some Seger.

I can never put my finger on a favorite tune, but Bob Seger's Greatest Hits album will always take me back to sitting in the car with my dad - on the way to soccer games, doing donuts in icy parking lots on Christmas Eve, blasting the songs with the whole family, or just him and his little girl.

Though the song has nothing to do with my outfit, this is my first set of photos taken after dusk. The title Night Moves just felt fitting. Working full time doesn't allow time to be on my side when it comes to taking blog photos, but this was a night ensemble anyway. I paired a sheer romper that I found at the thrift store a few years ago with a plaid shirt tied over, and of course, thigh highs!

street princess

I wanted these UNIF Hellriasers for months, and finally they showed up in my apartment in December wrapped just for me! I truly think the best gifts are something you know you want or need but haven't bought yourself just yet. I was so excited - and even in late January, I wear them almost everyday.

I've said over and over, I love pairing something ultra girly with something super edgy, and this was the case once again when I wore my new loafers with a hand made flower crown! A mild day in the city never felt better.

the wild side

Although my NYC posts are running short, I’m excited to start streaming my looks from my recent LA move. The weather here is incredible (duh) and it gives me tons of excuses to layer in a more creative way than I could in New York even when the weather was mild. I’ll get to that when you see those looks, though.

While putting together this outfit, I learned a lesson. For being a petite girl, I have yet to shed off my soccer thighs from playing for 13+ years. Even though my last competitive game was forever ago, the bodacious silhouette has stuck around. I’m not complaining, no way! BUT, for something like a leopard print pair of pants, I have to be careful. Most prints can be pulled off seamlessly if you’re skin and bones, but something like an animal print wrapped around a big booty can come off a little suggestive or even trashy. Hey, I’m just being honest. Making an animal print on my bottom half look casual took quite a few wardrobe changes and my conclusion was an oversized sweater in a color that reads anything but “sexy”.

Wearing my favorite cozy sweater and soft leopard pants were more than enough to make me happy on the way to breakfast!

top heavy

Oh, this makes me miss my neighborhood in New York. The daily errands up 3rd Avenue in Murray Hill - grocery shopping, frozen yogurt, pizza shops, awful bars... Everything imaginable was on 3rd Avenue. Even those belligerent frat boys.

New York, before I left, had a pretty mild winter. Thigh highs were an outfit staple. I mixed textures and layers for this lazy day look, and added a tiny pop of color! This is also one of my very favorite sweaters - I got it for a killer deal at Zara.

boots and cats

Layering plaid has been my winter go-to when it comes to print on print action. Its something, to me, that is so over complicated that it's almost simple. Does that make sense? I hope not.

I actually was inspired by a Gap ad when had to replicate the look. Good thing I had the pieces handy thanks to sample sales in New Jersey. To give this look a feminine spin, I added a good costume piece. What's better than a statement necklace? I'll answer that for you - not much.

I finally gave in and rewarded myself with a much needed new lens. It was something I should have done a long time ago, for myself and my blog, but better late than never! In case you want to know, I use a Canon Rebel XS (pretty much your entry level DLSR) and instead of the stock lens, I now use a 55mm 1.8 lens. It makes a world of a difference and is so cheap for a lens! I definitely recommend it if you're looking to take a step past your stock lens.

Now, the best part of this look may come as a surprise to you: the boots!

Have you heard of Caterpillar? I'm talking the brand that you usually see at a truck stop or on a tractor. Yes, those guys. They actually have a KILLER shoe line that I can't get enough of. A few months ago I was invited to take a look at their SS '13 line and could seriously see myself in every pair. I chose something different for a boot - a navy blue! The boots are incredibly high quality and are constructed with beautiful genuine leather.

i am what i am

2012 was no cake walk for me. Without a doubt it was one of the best years I have experienced thus far, but that didn't come without the most challenging moments either. I made decisions that caused me to sacrifice relationships, friendships, and respect of others. In exchange, I gained strength from the people that really mattered, and an understanding and respect from people I would much rather have in my life.

To some, I will always be judged. To others, I will be seen as strong. To me, well, I couldn't be more proud of myself.

This outfit can describe me pretty well. I'm sometimes seen as an all-american, simple, by the book girl. But really, on the inside, I'm a bit of a fuck up.

I thought I told ya not to get your hopes up...

a fresh start

To say I'm starting fresh in 2013 is an understatement. I have relocated out of New York City and was in the middle of the country when midnight hit for 2013. I am so excited for this next chapter, especially because I'm avoiding winter weather here!

Yes, I'm living in California! I have a new job within ocean view and can't believe I'm going head first into this new lifestyle. Though I have quite a few New York City outfit photos left to show you, you'll be seeing SoCal looks before you know it!

Below is a New Year's inspired look, enjoy!

PS: I create these flower crowns myself and if you would like to purchase one I am going to start custom making them! Let me know in the comments if you are interested or e-mail sarah@stylesarah.com
