dots on dots

Happy Christmas, y'all! I've got a few photos to catch up on for posts, so try to imagine snow on the ground in these photos instead of bright autumn leaves.

Peplum has been a huge trend this past year giving women a flirtatiously slimming yet curve inducing silhouette to play with. Skirts, dresses, and even pants have embraced this trend that is flattering on ladies of all shapes and sizes.

I got this peplum skirt a few years ago and I'm glad I kept it around - another reason I can't purge anything in my closet - I know it will always come back in style.

Aside from peplum, I layered a top that I otherwise rarely wear with a sash that came on a shirt I got from the thrift store. I love that the two of these pieces are the same pattern but different colors - it looks like they actually came together.

the anti-ugly sweater

The holiday season is full of parties - company parties where you try to watch how much you drink, family parties where you try to discreetly indulge in many drinks, and raging parties with friends where the whole point of the shindig is to over-drink.

While the holidays are not about drinking at all, festivities and parties are all over the place, and every single one of them requires a different type of attire. Recently, I ran into a party ensemble situation that many run into these days: what on earth am I supposed to wear? The party had no theme, and it also had no dress code. You couldn't tell by the type of people holding the event or other known attendees to predict if it was supposed to be a formal event or something super casual. This was my solution:

This look, to me, can be pulled off at both a casual and formal event. Its a dress with a plaid top layered over (so if you've run into something more formal than you thought, you can shed the button-down) paired with some over the knee socks and riding boots.

The formal vs. casual elements of this look can be altered and adjusted once you get to your event, so no matter what, you're sticking out of the crowd in a good way!

show a little leg

This outfit was from a couple weeks ago - you saw this look in a previous post when I was introducing you guys to the amazing men's grooming retailer The Motley. I wore this outfit when I went to visit them at Unique NYC show. I can't get over how amazing their stuff is (if you haven't checked out The Motley, go NOW!).

I have a huge thing for over the knee socks this season, and they're totally wearable since this winter has been pretty mild for Northeast standards. I'm doomed to pants and leggings during the work week, so when the weekend hits or an after hours social event is in the plans, my go-to has been some cozy thigh highs and a dress or skirt.

There is definitely a thin line that can make thigh highs too risque, so make sure your socks are a cozy knit - a soft merino wool or a ribbed knit give them a casual feel. Its also a good bet to sport a flowy dress or a chunky sweater, but keep in mind that there's no point in wearing over the knee socks if you're not showing a little bit of flirtatious skin, so let me see those legs!

punk rock princess

This day out in the city was so peaceful - it was a tourist-less weekday and beautiful weather to walk around midtown. I was feeling the big hair that day, and decided to head down the hair-band route with my outfit. Why not?

The ever-popular H&M jeggings this blog has come to love are making yet another appearance in the neon pink. This color can pair with toned down hues, but not toned down style. I went with a chambray button down, a black leather jacket, a statement necklace, and some fun little oxfords. These oxfords make me want to tap dance, but they're actually pretty slippery and I ended up tripping on a few street corners. Luckily my ass never hit the ground.

don't skimp on his stocking: the perfect gifts

The lovely folks from The Motley (a super rad men's grooming retailer) stopped by New York City to feature their favorite gifts at Unique NYC. Wether your man is well groomed or in need of some help, The Motley has something for every dude (because we know they all naturally smell bad).

Below are some photos from the event as well as my favorite gift items for the brother, father, or significant other in your life!

Super warm welcome, yes?

This is what a dude should smell like. Now your studio apartment won't smell like his dirty underwear.

For 8 bucks a pop, ain't no reason his face shouldn't feel like a baby's bottom.

The really good stuff from above plus more really good stuff in a gift set so you don't have to shop for him anymore.
Hello - more time to shop at Nasty Gal for yourself!

A scent for the lady! Yes, every time you buy something for him, you should buy something for yourself.
They say it smells like Tuberose & Jasmine, I say it smells like amazeballs.

little miss oxblood

My mom was in town visiting just as the weather turned cold in New York City. Still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, I was excited to get dressed and play downtown. I had lost power for around 6 days from the superstorm.

My mom and I had the best time together. On this particular day, we lunched at Balthazar in SoHo. Its something that she's always wanted to do but just never got around to for years. It was so wonderful having my mom all to myself with no particular plans or obligations. I miss seeing her everyday.

On another note, wearing the color of the season feels so good! Oxblood is so sophisticated and is perfect on any accessory or piece of clothing. It really is a color that I doubt can be used incorrectly.

Sweater: Express (but gifted from a friend and worn upside down for a slouchy silhouette)

giving thanks

My first true Thanksgiving in the city was nothing short of incredible. The weather was beyond perfect, the trees were turned just right, and something I didn't expect to appreciate: the city was nearly a ghost town.

I got to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade (okay, from a block away), make Thanksgiving dinner, watch football, and truly relax during the holiday. I did miss my family (and my mom's delicious cooking) a whole bunch, but I'm that much more excited to go back to Ohio over the Christmas holiday!

I channeled my inner cowboy & indian with this look - lots of fringe and natural color! I know there are a ton of photos, but I couldn't narrow it down anymore! Hope everybody had a lovely Thanksgiving!
